What is the book?

"Around My Hometown" is the first ever regional guidebook that contains over 400 entertaining, educational, kid-friendly attractions in Hampton Roads. All the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD). It is presented in an easy to read format with several ways to cross reference. Parents and children will be able to find activities that suit their interests, budgets and age groups. It is an invaluable resource for family fun in the thirteen-plus cities from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach, Suffolk to Gloucester..

Who wrote it?

Over 50 volunteers in the Union of Hands Circle (UOH) of the Norfolk City Union of The King's Daughters (NCUKD) have worked tirelessly to see this enormous project through to completion. The members of the UOH Circle live primarily in Norfolk and include stay at home moms, stay at home moms who were previously working professionals, working professionals who are also moms, and working professionals. Besides the circle members, the book could not have been produced without two women. Terre Ittner, the artist and Patricia Neal Jewell, the typesetter/designer, who are not members of the circle, but spent an uncountable number of hours on the layout and design of the book.

Why was it written?

Around My Hometown was written for two purposes. One was to fulfill a need for a single, comprehensive source of entertainment activities for children in Hampton Roads. The second purpose was to raise money for CHKD. It is a regional kids book that raises money for the region's sick kids - seemed like a perfect fit.

Who funded it?

The UOH Circle raised money from area businesses (see list of ) to print and publish the book.  All the proceeds from the sale of the book will go directly to the hospital.  The first edition raised more than $30,000 for the hospital and the second edition raised more than $20,000.

Where can I buy it?

Fortunately, all 5000 copies have been sold and more than $50,000 was raised for CHKD.  At the moment there is not a plan to reprint the books again, but check back as we may change our minds!
